The Wolf of Wall Street Review

Starring: Leonardo Dicaprio, Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie

Directed by: Martin Scorsese

Based on the book by: Jordan Belfort

Drugs, money and allot of sex, those are the three things you are most likely to find in the biopic on Jordan Belfort directed by master Martin Scorsese. After his last film-and first child friendly movie-Hugo, it seems that Scorsese has returned to the adult entertainment that he is known for. Reunited with Departed star Leonardo Dicaprio and returning to the dirty world of the corrupt, the Wolf of Wall Street is a welcomed return to form for Scorsese. This movie has been building allot of hype as it quickly reached it's Christmas release date, and while I was late to the party on this one, I can say that I have finally had a chance to watch this insane movie, and I loved every minute of it.

The Wolf of Wall Street is about corrupt stock broker Jordan Belfort and his rise/fall to power. The movie portrays the insane life and the unbelievable antics that Belfort and his entire firm act upon and you cant help but not believe that any of it is true. Many of the things that are shown in this movie are so wild and out there that it seems almost like a demented version of  some strange cartoon. However according to the book by Belfort almost everything in this movie happened, which makes me worried about the lives of the privileged running this country and the world.

Of course not everything is drug induced sun and rainbows, Belfort is really not a good guy and when I say that I really mean it. He does basically every single despicable thing-besides murder- that I can think of. This is where the movie shines, on the outside this might look like a pro drug frenzy of a film but in reality Scorsese does what he does best and shows us the downward spiral that drugs, money, and corruption can have on a man. At the start of the film Belfort isn't really that bad of a guy, he's just a young man who moved to New York with dreams of success, of course once he gets a sniff of said success he quickly spirals down into a chaotic life style that would have killed the normal man and got three elephants high.

Leonardo Dicaprio gives one of his best performances to date, he is even nominated for an Oscar for his hilarious and dark interpretation of Belfort. Leo has really made a name for himself over the years, he quickly broke away from the pretty boy personage that he was known for in the 90's and has now become one of the industries best and most respected actors. It goes without question that he is casting perfection in this movie and Scorsese could not have picked a better leading man. The great acting does not simply stop at Dicaprio, the acting is across the board in this movie, even actors who have minimal screen time give it there best. Jonah Hill who plays Belforts right hand man is also up for his second Oscar nom this year and it's really surprising the range that Hill has as an actor. Also newcomer Margot Robbie is superb as Belforts wife, not only is she gorgeous but she is an incredible actress that is on par with the entire cast of the movie and really shows off her talent near the films finale.

Although this movie is a Scorsese film it is also the funniest movie I've seen this year. The Wolf of Wall Street has very dark and crude humor-a la Good Fellas-and I found myself laughing hysterically at somethings that shouldn't really be shouldn't be considered funny. It's hard to believe that these people lived like this its utter insanity! With the great humor sprinkled throughout the movie its hard to tell that this is a three hour movie. However I am not like most people and some audiences might find the three hour run time a hefty commitment for a film, but I assure you put any notions of that to the side and watch this movie because its a hilarious ride. Even though the movie is funny Scorsese quickly rips the carpet out from your feet by the end of the movie as the film quickly takes an unexpected dark turn.

And of course this isn't a Scorsese movie if we don't touch on the soundtrack. The Wolf of Wall Street has an amazing soundtrack, Scorsese is a genius when mashing together songs from different genres and eras, Scorsese could teach Baz Lurman a thing or two when it comes to mashing eras and genres in films. Each song is selected perfectly for its scene, where Scorsese gets this I have no idea but there is a reason he is one of the best directors working today, and this is one of them.

The Wolf of Wall Street is obvious Oscar bait but it is such a fun and crazy ride I give it a

8.5/10

It's Scorsese! Of course it's going to be a near perfect movie, but the content and the run time might through off some viewers, I still highly suggest you see it because it's one of the best movies of the year.
