Anchorman 2 The Legend Continues Review
Starring: Will Ferrel, Paul Rudd and Steve Carrel
Directed by: Adam McKay
Released: December 18th, 2013
The first Anchorman movie came out over ten years ago, it doesn't feel like that much time has passed since the Channel 4 News Team first brought their antics onto the screen. After such a long wait we finally get the sequel we've all been waiting for, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues might not been what many were expecting from the return of Will Ferrel's greatest creation, this movie made sure to take the random and bizarre stupidity from the first movie and bring it up to a whole new level of ridiculousness and I loved every minute of it.
Taking place in 1980, Anchorman 2 shows the evolution of the evening news as washed up anchorman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrel) is hired to be an anchor for a twenty-four hour news station. Without a job and being divorced from Veronica Corningstone(Christina Applegate) Ron takes the plunge into the strange world of twenty-four hour news and he brings along some familiar faces for the ride. Facing many challenges like rival anchors, his own discrimination to his new African American boss, regaining the trust of his family, and battling sharks and werehyena's Ron clearly has his work cut out for him as he tries his hardest to climb up the ladder to become number 1 again. That is as far as the plot goes for the movie as it quickly spirals into mayhem, of course the movie is filled with the bumbling stupidity that we would all come to expect from Ron Burgundy and the Chanel Four New Team and a nice added subplot featuring everyones favorite weatherman Brick (Steve Carrel).
While this movie is filled with hilarious cameos and the most bizarre plot ever (Ron raises a Shark named Doby....don't ask) what this movie does best-and subtly- is provide an amazing satire into the world of twenty four hour news and what it has quickly changed into of the years. You get everything from the stupid celebrity stories, to the animations on the screens, Will Ferrel has done a very clever job at poking fun at not just the news but certain news stations like Fox News and CNN.
The strongest actor in the movie however is Steve Carrel whose character Brick has become quite the cult phenomenon. Brick is given allot more to do this time around in the movie which will either work for some audience members or not. I personally love the character but I can see how his constant one liners (which often make no sense) would get on the nerves of some. But his strange relationship with Kristen Wig's character is heartfelt and filled with many gut wrenching laughs that we've come to expect from the character.
What most jarring about the movie is the change of pace it takes during the second half of the movie, its almost like Adam McKay left the directing duties to Will Ferrell himself because the movie dissolves into something I cant really explain. It was random, and very bizarre and the only way you can understand what I mean is to see the movie.
Anchorman 2 is a pretty solid comedy in a year where we've had only two memorable additions to the genre. Its hilarious and the comedic timing by all actors is spot on, I highly recommend you go see this movie if you want a good laugh.
I rate Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues a
8/10
I was laughing throughout the entire film which is all the really matters when you're seeing a comedy I hope that Will Ferrel returns to the strange world of Ron Burgundy very soon.
