My Ten Most Anticipated Movies of 2014
We're already in the middle of January, so far 2014 really hasn't given us anything memorable as far as movies go, but there is still a glimmer of hope. This is looking to be one fantastic year for film with many awesome blockbusters, the final film in a legendary directors portfolio and a return to form to a personal favorite actor and creature. Here is my list of my most anticipated movies of 2014, so far.
10. Dumber and Dumber To
Starring: Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels
Directed by: Peter Farrelly and Sean Anders
Release Date: November 14th 2014
I'm a 90's kid so you know what that means. A) I think Jim Carrey is the funniest man in the world and B) Dumbe and Dumber is one of the funniest movies ever made period. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels have had a pretty rough time trying to get the sequel to their comedy classic off the ground. It's been twenty years since the first Dumb and Dumber movie came out-that prequel does not count!- it seems after such a long wait we are finally going to see Lloyd and Harry return to the big screen. This movie could be one of the best comedies to come around in ages but there is a high possibility of this being a total failure, who knows if current audience goers are ready for good old fashion 90's humor, we will have to see, but I am on board.
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Starring: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke
Directed by: Matt Reeves
Release Date: July 11th, 2014
I love Planet of the Apes, its one of the great sci-fi classics. We've had an entire original series, an animated series and a very forgettable reboot by Tim Burton, so when Rise of the Planet of the Apes was scheduled two years ago I was very nervous, but all my fears were quickly destroyed because it was one hell of a good movie, in fact it was my favorite movie of 2011. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks like it could even be better than it's predecessor, we will see the downfall of mankind and the rise of apekind in what is sure to be one of the coolest and bleak post apocalyptic movies to come out in a very long time. I also think Andy Serkis deserves an Oscar for his great portrayal of Cesear, however the Academy is not kind it motion capture or voice acting which is a pity because it is totally deserved.
8. Transcendence
Starring: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall and Paul Bettany
Directed by: Wally Pifser
Release Date: April 17th 2014
I'm a big science fiction geek, I cant get enough of science fiction books or movies-probably why a few of the movies in this list fall in the genre-what I find even more interesting is the Singularity Theory. A machine entity that can transcend beyond the limits of our own minds and possibly take control of the planet, and other than Alien Invasion the idea of a Machines taking over the world completely freaks me out. The trailer to Transcendence already captured the awe and terror of first time director Wally Pifser's science fiction thriller, and while I am not the biggest Johnny Depp fan in the world I have to admit that he looks absolutely terrifying in this movie as the man who becomes a machine god.
7. Guardians of the Galaxy
Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoey Saldana and Karen Gillian
Directed by: James Gunn
Release Date: August 1st, 2014
Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel Studios/Disneys wild card. Hardly anyone out side of the comic book circle has heard of the team, and from the post credit sequence in Thor the Dark World it looks like this might be their most outlandish film yet. However I am completely on board with this movie, it looks like pure insanity, you have a talking raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper who wields machine guns, and a giant talking tree voiced by Vin Diesel, why wouldn't you want to see this movie? It also has Doctor Who star Karen Gillian as the villain so I'm already on board, and since is the last film in Phase 2 before Age of Ultron I just hope it doesn't suck like Iron Man 3.
6. Rurouni Kenshin the Great Kyoto Fire and the End of a Legend
Starring: Takeru Satoh, Emi Takei and Tatsuya Fujiwara
Directed by: Keishi Otomo
Based on the Manga by: Nobuhiro Watsuki
Release Date:
JAPAN August 1st, 2014, September 13th 2014
North America, To Be Announced.
Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X is one of the best manga/anime to ever be produced. The Meji era love story is fantastic with great samurai action, it's a beloved franchise that has stood the test of time and I suggest you read the manga or watch the series. In 2012 the first live action movie based on the series was released and of course like every fan we were worried, they were obviously going to screw it up, thankfully that was no the case. The first Kenshin movie is THE BEST ADAPTATION to any manga/comic I have ever seen. The characters were translated on the screen to utter perfection and the action was out of this world. This year in Japan two films are being released this summer based on the famous Kyoto arc. Instead of only cramming in the huge arc into a 2 hour movie we are getting two films released the same year and to make it better they are both a month apart, if thats not justice to the series I don't know what is. Also one of my favorite Japanese Actors (Tatsuya Fujiwara) is in it and has been cast as the villain Shishio and he looks just like his bandaged manga counterpart.
5. The Hobbit: There and Back Again
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage
Directed by: Peter Jackson
Release Date: December 17th, 2014
I love the Middle Earth series, I love the books and I especially love the films. Peter Jackson did the impossible with directing the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and with his new Hobbit trilogy he seems to be making the same impact he did so many years ago with the original trilogy. The Desolation of Smaug had one heck of a cliffhanger, and if you haven't read the book-I question you if you haven't-then you have no idea of the insanity that is to come. It just doesn't end at Smaug, oh no we are going to see Dwarf armies, Orc armies, Goblin armies, and armies of men. I also can't wait to see the full white council battle it out with the Necromancer/Sauron. It will be a great movie to end the year with.
4. The Wind Rises
Starring:
JAPAN Hideaki Anno, Mirori Takimoto and Hidetoshi Nishijima
ENGLISH Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Jennifer Grey
Directed by: Hayao Miyazaki
Release Date: JAPAN July 20th 2013
North America February 21 2014
Its truly the end of an era, one of animation's great minds is leaving the anime scene. Hayao Miyazaki is a genius, the main mind behind Studio Ghibli is giving us his farewell. The Wind Rises has already hit Japan and it's themes on war has made it quite the controversial film. Rarely does Studio Ghibli produce a film with such serious content, and it seems that this is a story that's been on Miyazaki's mind for a very long time now. The movie is up for an Oscar for Best Animated Picture and it's the studios third nomination. The other two went to Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away which one for best Animated Picture.
3. Captain America: the Winter Soldier
Starring: Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan
Directed by: Anthony and Joe Russo
Release Date: April 4th, 2014
I might be Canadian but Captain America is my favorite superhero. The First Avenger captured the essence of the character amazingly and Chris Evans was a big surprise as Cap himself. He's only shown how good he can be in the Avengers and now we get to see Cap deal with the new world post WWII. What I am most excited for in this movie is the introduction to a personal favorite Marvel character of mine and that is the Winter Soldier. For those of you who have no idea about the character I wont spoil his identity but the Winter Soldier story lines are always some of the most interesting and best that Cap has had in his long comic run. Also Black Widow has been moved up to the leading lady for once instead of a side character, I don't think that neither Iron Man 2 or the Avengers portrayed her in the best way they could. But with the Winter Soldier we will finally get to see her Soviet Russia roots and get more into the depths of her character.
2. X-Men Days of Future Past
Starring: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender
Directed by: Bryan Singer
Release Date: May 23rd, 2014
Admit it you would be lying if you said you were not excited for this movie at all. Any comic book fan is piratically jumping out of their pants. We are getting one of the BEST X-MEN STORIES told on the big screen and we have Bryan Singer-although he's been getting hate-who is directing and has directed the two best X-men movies in the entire film franchise. A stroke of genius to include the First Class time-line and the original cast, the amount of amazing actors in this movie is astounding and after the surprising amazing the Wolverine my patience is running very thin, I need to see this now!
1. Godzilla
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeht Olsen
Directed by: Gareth Edwards
Release Date: May 16th 2014
Thats right, the movie I am most looking forward to with a crazed frenzy of anticipation is Godzilla. Growing up I was a huge Godzilla fan and I've remained one to this day. I love the Big G and there isn't a Godzilla movie that I hate, I've seen them all and used to own them all back in the good old days of VHS. The Original Godzilla is a masterpiece and in my opinion one of the best movies ever made. However over the course of the franchise Toho seemed to have forgotten what Godzilla actually was, a massive force of destruction. From the first trailer it seems the tone has already been set, this is going to be a bleak film just like the original. Watch that trailer and tell me you don't get goosebumps when you first see Godzilla standing in a completely destroyed city!
So that's my list of the top ten movies I am most looking forward to this coming year. Of course I'll learn of other movies that might take the attention away from some of these films but as it stands now these are the movies I want to see this year and I will see opening day for sure!
10. Dumber and Dumber To
Starring: Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels
